The forest at The Stiks has been very carefully managed according to the
guidelines advised by the Department of Natural Resources. This management
has involved selective thinning, under brushing and controlled burning to
promote maximum growth of the trees and reduce fire hazard. The Cypress has
flourished under these conditions and sustainable logging can be undertaken.

Cypress is a very common timber of the Western Downs Region of Queensland.
It has a beautiful grain and is renown for it durability and
resistance to termite attack.
It
is one of the world's hardest pine trees and is valued for flooring for that
reason.
It is also an excellent timber for pole house or log cabin construction. The
Breay's log cabin at The Stiks is constructed almost entirely with Cypress pine
log walls, sawn internal panels and beautiful parquetry flooring.
Even very old dead logs can be rejuvenated, such as the one used in the
sculpture at right.
